The South Australian Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence released its report yesterday.

National Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner, Micaela Cronin, was invited to the release of the final report from the South Australian Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence in Adelaide yesterday. We thank Commissioner Stott Despoja, the Royal Commission's advisory group and secretariat, and all those who contributed to this powerful report. We remember the women whose tragic deaths sparked this Royal Commission in November 2023.

Over 5,000 people contributed to this Commission, which resulted in 136 recommendations. Their voices, especially those with lived experience and from First Nations communities, must continue to be heard in the development and implementation of solutions.

The South Australian Government’s immediate commitment to seven recommendations from the Royal Commission suggests change is underway. These initial commitments are related to establishing governance mechanisms and embedding accountability at all levels of government lay critical foundations.

The report contained two recommendations related to the national Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commission (DFSV Commission). The first, that the Australian Government task and resource the DFSV Commission with an independent audit of the family law system to identify and address the potential for systems abuse. The second recommendation is for the DFSV Commission to work with the Australian government to develop a national standard for responsible media reporting on domestic, family and sexual violence.

Commissioner Cronin thanked the Royal Commission. "I look forward to working with the South Australian Government and the Federal Government to review these two recommendations and, along with the other recommendations, take this work forward.”

The Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commission is eager to review all 136 recommendations in greater detail, and to receive South Australian Government’s response to the Royal Commission’s report later this year.
